Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for communication, engagement, and advocacy in contemporary society. They play a significant role in shaping perceptions, fostering dialogue, and promoting shared values among diverse groups. In multicultural nations like Nigeria, where ethnic, religious, and regional differences often create divisions, social media presents an opportunity to bridge gaps and promote national integration. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp facilitate real-time interactions and provide a space for individuals from different backgrounds to engage on issues of common interest (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2023). In Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where cultural and religious diversity is prominent, the role of social media in fostering national integration warrants critical exploration. This study seeks to examine how social media usage contributes to promoting unity and understanding among the diverse population in Makarfi.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has the potential to foster national integration, it is often criticized for exacerbating divisions by spreading misinformation, hate speech, and polarized narratives. In Makarfi, where ethnic and religious tensions occasionally arise, the dual nature of social media as a tool for both unity and discord presents a significant challenge. Despite its capacity to provide a platform for dialogue and shared understanding, the extent to which social media fosters national integration in such contexts remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the role of social media in promoting unity and understanding in Makarfi Local Government Area.
